MathEdu UMS Presents International Lecturers, Inviting 6th Semester Students to Explore the Philosophy of Mathematics

The Mathematics Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, once again held an international Visiting Lecturer program for the Introducing to Philosophy of Mathematics course. This event was held online via Zoom Meeting over four sessions: May 5, May 12, May 19, and May 26, 2026. The primary target audience was sixth-semester students in the Mathematics Education Study Program currently taking the course.

This event featured an international lecturer, Andrew J. Siducon, Ph.D.(Cn) from Cavite State University, as the main speaker. In each session, students were encouraged to understand various basic concepts of the philosophy of mathematics, from the nature of mathematics and philosophical thinking in mathematics to how philosophy plays a role in the development of mathematics learning in the modern era.

The learning process was interactive and enjoyable. The communicative presentation of the material facilitated students’ understanding of philosophical concepts previously considered abstract and difficult to grasp. Furthermore, discussions during the lectures provided opportunities for students to express their views and critical thinking regarding mathematics and mathematics education.

The lecturer in charge of the course, Drs. Slamet Hw., M.Pd., stated that the Visiting Lecturer program provided a valuable learning experience for students. He stated that learning with international speakers opened new perspectives on the philosophy of mathematics and provided students with a broader understanding, allowing them to view mathematics not only as arithmetic but also as a study with profound philosophical value.

Through this activity, the Mathematics Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMS), hopes that sixth-semester students will be further motivated to develop critical, reflective thinking, and an openness to developments in mathematics education internationally. The Visiting Lecturer program also demonstrates MathEdu UMS’s commitment to improving the quality of learning and expanding its academic network.
