Introducing fun mathematics and science learning methods, the UMS lecturer team carried out community service with elementary school/Islamic elementary school teachers in Sragen Regency

SRAGEN, August 9, 2025— Mathematics and science learning in elementary schools in Sregan Regency still faces challenges. Much of the learning tends to be theoretical, lacking connections to everyday life, and minimal use of technology and interactive media. This situation results in low student understanding and interest in mathematics and science. This is the result of a situational analysis conducted in collaboration with the Elementary School Principals’ Communication Forum (FKKS) of Sragen Regency.

To address these challenges, the Community Service Team, led by Nuqthy Faiziyah, S.Pd., M.Pd., along with members Ika Candra Sayekti, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Dr. Muhammad Noor Kholid, M.Pd., conducted a Community Service activity themed “Implementing STEAM-Project-Based Learning for Enjoyable Elementary School Mathematics and Science Learning.”

This activity demonstrates support for strengthening research and community service, carried out by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) through the Directorate General of Research and Development (Ditjen Risbang). This initiative aligns with the Asta Cita (Asta Cita) of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as outlined in the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), specifically in efforts to strengthen the research and innovation ecosystem oriented towards technological advancement and improving public welfare. This community service initiative, in collaboration with the Elementary School Principals Communication Forum (FKKS) of Sragen Regency Elementary Schools (SD/MI), ran from July to December 2025.

The first phase of the activity focused on outreach and discussions with partners, while gathering input and needs from partner schools. The outreach program involved the principals of Muhammadiyah Elementary School in Sragen, Birrul Walidain Muhammadiyah Elementary School in Tanon, and Muhammadiyah Elementary School (MIM) Taraman, Drs. Supono, M.Pd., Head of the Sragen District PCM, and Drs. Sumadi, Head of the Elementary and Secondary Education (Dikdasmen) PDM Sragen. This discussion serves as an initial step and an important foundation for planning and implementing subsequent community service activities.

Drs. Sumadi, Head of Elementary and Secondary Education (Dikdasmen) at the Sragen Regional Leadership Council (PDM) expressed his high appreciation for this community service activity. He stated that the collaboration between the Muhammadiyah Elementary School/Islamic Elementary School (SD/MI) Forum (FKKS) in Sragen Regency and the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (UMS) is a very positive step and should be continued. “We strongly respond to and appreciate this extraordinary activity. We hope this collaboration will not stop at this one activity, but will continue with other programs, so that Muhammadiyah elementary school/Islamic elementary school teachers throughout Sragen Regency can continue to collaborate with UMS. May Allah bless all our activities, make them successful, and bring happiness in this world and the hereafter,” he said.

The principal of Birrul Walidain Muhammadiyah Tanon Elementary School also expressed his gratitude and hopes for this community service activity. He believes the collaboration with UMS will significantly benefit Muhammadiyah’s charitable efforts in Sragen Regency, especially for the school he leads. “Hopefully, this activity will bring tangible benefits to the development of our school and inspire us to continue doing good. Be someone who is useful to others, so that we can become better individuals in the future.”

Nuqthy Faiziyah, S.Pd., M.Pd., the team leader, hopes that this community service initiative, initiated by the partner teachers, will positively impact all other teachers in Sragen, encouraging more creative, contextual learning and leveraging technology.

“We hope that the launch of the STEAM Community by the partner teachers will be the first step toward a positive and sustainable impact on other teachers in Sragen, encouraging them to continue innovating in their learning.” (Nabilah Annisa’/Laboratory Assistant)
