Community Service: Muhammadiyah Elementary School Teachers in Sragen Enthusiastically Participate in STEAM Project-Based Learning Training

Sragen, August 30, 2025 – A community service activity themed “Implementing STEAM-Project-Based Learning for Enjoyable Elementary School Mathematics and Science” was held at Birrul Walidain Muhammadiyah Tanon Elementary School on Saturday, August 30, 2025. The event featured teachers from Muhammadiyah Elementary School Sragen, Birrul Walidain Muhammadiyah Tanon Elementary School, and Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Muhammadiyah (MIM) Taraman, with the goal of creating enjoyable elementary school mathematics and science learning.

The event was divided into three main sessions. In the first session, Nuqthy Faiziyah, S.Pd., M.Pd., presented material on STEAM. During this session, several teachers expressed that mathematics and science subjects are still considered difficult to teach to students, especially mathematics. In response, Nuqthy Faiziyah, S.Pd., M.Pd., emphasized the importance of creating a fun learning environment. “Don’t add to students’ trauma related to mathematics; make it a fun experience. With STEAM, students can improve their critical thinking skills and create a fun learning environment because they are given real-life visualizations,” said Nuqthy Faiziyah, S.Pd., M.Pd.

The second session was delivered by Ika Candra Sayekti, S.Pd., M.Pd. with the material Project Based Learning. On this occasion, teachers conveyed three main challenges in learning, namely limited media, lack of student activeness, and minimal teacher creativity. Ika Candra Sayekti, S.Pd., M.Pd. emphasized that creativity is the key to overcoming limitations. “Teachers are required to be creative within limitations. Teachers are the masterminds in learning,” explained Ika Candra Sayekti, S.Pd., M.Pd..

The third session included hands-on practice in implementing STEAM Project-Based Learning, where teachers built a rubber-powered car from used bottles. This activity provided teachers with real-world experience integrating mathematics and science through project-based activities. In this session, teachers were given the opportunity to analyze the components or elements of STEAM and present the results of their rubber-powered car creations.

Participants’ enthusiasm was evident in the various responses from teachers after the training. One teacher at Birrul Walidain Muhammadiyah Elementary School, Tanon, said, “I felt after participating in the STEAM Project-Based Learning training that learning mathematics and science was exciting, exciting, and enjoyable. This was especially true because the presentations by Ms. Nuqthy Faiziyah, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Ms. Ika Candra Sayekti, S.Pd., M.Pd. were engaging, fun, and easy to understand. We also built a spring-powered car, although our group still had difficulty getting it to run. However, this actually fostered a strong sense of curiosity, especially when it was later implemented with the students.”

This activity is expected to inspire teachers to develop creative, innovative, enjoyable, and meaningful learning, thereby improving the quality of basic education in Indonesia, particularly in Sragen. (Nabilah Annisa’/Laboratory Assistant)
